Founder Guides (2026)

Long-form, opinionated guides on choosing SaaS tools. No fluff, no "it depends." Just answers.

The guides on this page are different from the tool reviews and comparisons. Reviews answer "is this tool good?" Guides answer "how should I think about this whole problem?" If you're trying to decide what to evaluate (not just which tool to pick from a known shortlist), start here.

Each guide is structured around a specific decision a founder or SMB operator has to make: how to choose a CRM, when to upgrade your stack, how to negotiate SaaS contracts, how to audit a bloated tool stack. The guides take a position. They tell you what to do and why, not "here are 12 considerations." If you want a balanced overview, go to G2 or Gartner. If you want an answer, read the guides below.

Guide Categories

The 20 guides break down into four loose buckets:

  • Choosing tools. "How to choose X" guides for the major SaaS categories. Read these when you're starting an evaluation from scratch and need a framework, not just a tool ranking.
  • Stack management. Guides on auditing your current stack, eliminating redundancy, and managing SaaS sprawl. Read these when your monthly SaaS bill has crept up and you're not sure what's actually being used.
  • Vendor relationships. Guides on negotiating contracts, evaluating vendor stability, and dealing with renewal pressure. Read these before signing or renewing any annual contract over $5K.
  • Budgeting and planning. Guides on stack costs, pricing model trade-offs, and timing purchases for maximum discount. Read these during annual budget planning.

How to Use the Guides

Most guides are 2,000-3,000 words. That's longer than a tool review but shorter than a textbook. Read them all the way through the first time, then bookmark them as references for the next time the same question comes up. The guides are evergreen and we update them when the underlying tools or market shift in ways that change the recommendations.

If you're looking for something specific that isn't covered, browse the category index for category-specific tool rankings, or the tools index for the full A-Z list of every tool we cover.
